Bookings for holidays abroad have seen a significant boost following the recent lifting and relaxing of rules not just in the UK, but worldwide.
One of the top destinations all year round is, of course, the United States.
Bearing that in mind, we thought it might be a good idea to share with you some of the top places to visit in the USA.
Situated in one of the oldest states, Boston is filled with history. Therefore it should be no surprise that the city is home to the first of many things - whether that be America’s first large free municipal public library, the first subway system, the first public park and the first public school.
If there is one tip to give when visiting Boston, it will be to pack comfortable shoes. The Freedom Trail – a red-brick path connecting many of the city’s most famous historic sites – is 2.5 miles long and best explored on foot if possible. However, if you do want to hop around quickly, use the subway system (called the ‘T’) and get yourself a seven-day unlimited pass - which is good value if you’re staying longer.
Don’t forget, Boston is a seafood city, so make the most of it. If you find yourself confused, the catch of the day will typically be called ‘scrod’ on the menu.
If Boston is the city for walking, then Chicago might well be the perfect city for cycling. With over 200 miles of bike lanes, 19 miles worth of lakefront bicycle paths, and more than 13,000 bike racks and parking areas, there’s no shortage of space to ride through the city on two wheels.
America’s third-largest city is a place of diversity, industry and a thriving arts scene. Be prepared to be looking up a whole lot too. A trip to Chicago wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Cloud Gate, located in Millennium Park. A few other favourites include the Picasso statue, just off Michigan Avenue and 875 North Michigan. The near 1,500 foot skyscraper, formerly named John Hancock Center, was one of the tallest buildings in the world when it was completed in 1969.
If you are looking for somewhere unlike anywhere else, New Orleans is for you. A city known for its European-style architecture and distinct music culture, New Orleans oozes colour and energy like no other place. Delve deep into the colonial architecture and Creole cuisine during the day, and when the sun goes down, prepare yourself to be captivated by the festivals and vibrant nightlife that this unique city has to offer.
If you’re a fan of Jazz, make sure to visit Louis Armstrong Park and a 12-foot statue of Louis Armstrong - maybe right before you head to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. Did I mention that Louis Armstrong was born in New Orleans and is a pretty big icon here?
Colorado is certainly a year-round destination and holds some of the best landscapes and natural beauty in the country. From mountain hikes to long, winding scenic drives, the western state offers a quintessential American experience.
Visit the southwest corner of the state and you can find yourself standing in Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Utah all at the same time. This is the only place in America where the corners of four states meet - certainly a good spot for an impressive and memorable selfie.
If you’re looking for a ski trip, Vail, a small ski town located west of Denver, is a perfect spot whether you’re a veteran skier or a fresh-faced first-timer. Alternatively, Colorado Springs offers a perfect getaway without all the slopes, but plenty of hiking areas.
A list of places to visit in the US is not complete without mentioning New York City. What isn’t NYC known for? It’s iconic for its baseball, holds the largest marathon in the world and has an ever-growing football (soccer) scene - and that’s just sports alone.
Regardless of how long you’re visiting New York, it is impossible to do and see everything. The best advice would be to make a list and prioritise the things you want to do most. The city is also deceptively larger than you think, so consider organising specific areas for specific days. For example, set aside a day for Brooklyn, wander the Botanic Garden, walk across the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. Then maybe the next day, you can head to Downtown Manhattan and visit the National 9/11 Memorial, explore SoHo, or Washington Square. New York is renowned for being the busiest city in the world - planning and organisation is key.
